Jeremiah McLane
Freetown is the capital of Sierra Leone, in West Africa, where my family lived for a year when I was eight. I have many fond memories of our house, the town, and the surrounding area. For me it was a year of newness and exploration (swimming in the ocean at Christmas), trials and fears (fire ants, snakes, barracuda). This album takes inspiration in part from that time: we swam at Lumley Beach every opportunity we had and made frequent excursions "up country" to Kenema. Other inspirations for the music on this CD come from the places I have lived: I grew up not far from Quebec, and the dance music from that area has had a huge influence on my music. Likewise the years I spent living in France and listening to French music have shaped the way I play. One of the greatest insirations of all was my mother Carol Evarts McLane who sang, played the piano and bassoon, all while raising six children. This album is dedicated to her memory.
